Identity Theft is A Form of Fraud Identity theft can happen to anyone. To prevent this from happening, here are a few important things you should remember. 1. Guard your financial information with your life especially your credit card and bank account number so no one will be able to use it. 2. The same goes for your social security number because each person has a distinct number. This should only be given to someone you know like when you are applying for a job or insurance. To prevent this number from being misused, ask them to give you a separate ID number. 3. Most identify theft incidents occur when someone calls you up or sends an email saying that they are representatives from your bank and need to verify your personal information. Remember that this is something they already have so you don't have to say anything and just confirm whether or not what is on file is true. Before you say yes to what they are asking, it is a good idea to contact the company directly. 4. A lot of mail gets into the box. Examples of these include credit card bills and other billing statements. If you no longer need to keep these on file, don't just throw it in the trash but use a paper shredder to destroy it. You can even burn them if you like. Since this information may be opened while in transit, maybe you can have these sent to the post office then you just pick these up. 5. Identity theft can happen if your name appears in a marketing list. The best thing to do would be to get your name off the list. 6. Passwords and PIN numbers may be compromised if you leave these inside your wallet or someone public. You can avoid this from happening by memorizing it and not divulging this to anybody. 7. Important documents about yourself should be locked in a secure place inside your home. It is best to get a vault that has a key and not the combination version since it is harder for someone to open it. 8. If you love to shop online, make sure that your credit card information is scrambled or encrypted by the one who operates the site. This is their way of making sure your identity is safe. Your identity should be secure at all times. One way to check on this is to get a credit report regularly. Should there be discrepancies, make sure this is corrected.
