Another modus involves a stranger walking up to you to ask if they could borrow your phone for an emergency call, in exchange they hand you over a very expensive phone that acts as decoy while they disappear with yours. It turns out the phone you have is not even working.

And the most common is the ATM card scam, how can this be done? There are different ways but the most common is when a person gets hold of your ATM goes online to cash out or transfer all your balance to a different account. Avoiding scams like these are a must nowadays.

Different scams and different modus of operations can be detected if you have a little know how. But how exactly do you do it? Are there ways or exact steps to do it? Yes there is and they are easy to remember and follow.

- Be vigilant. Always be aware of your stuff. If you know that your things are not in the places that they should be, panic. Well, not really panic but be concerned. If it's not with you then it has to be somewhere else and that thought alone should be enough for you to be concerned. Remember that it is not bad to take care of your belongings.

- Never leave or make withdrawals in a secluded area. You may not be a victim of a scam, it can be worse. You might even be mugged. Make sure that when you withdraw money people are around to see what's happening in case you need help.

- Change your Personal Identification Number (PIN) regularly. Someone may have a good eye for remembering what you press in the machine. And if that person can get your ATM card you will be sure to have a hard time explaining where the money went.

- Take responsibility. That means you have to regularly check how much you have and make an accounting of it. Knowing how much you have may very well be the first and the last thing you need to do to protect yourself and the best way in avoiding ATM scams.
